Rumour has it that Rudy Ratzinger doesn't have an agenda with his music -- but the continuous dark and evil connotations in his titles and tracks of CDs, coupled with the deep electronic resonating, hard pounding militant percussion and noise layers such as he has released over the years, one would give way to wonder if there is some personal substance to his work other than his creativity and talents in doing so. Born Again doesn't stray from such topics as "death", "the devil jeering", "clipping angels wings", and "embryodead". The sounds on "Born Again" are threatening, evil sounding, and thrusting electronic industrial. Diversity compliments this release, with remixes of a number of tracks, one by Haujobb, "Die In Winter" off Bunker Gate Seven (a bonus track) , "Vaporize" remixed by Aghast View (great track), and two previously unreleased tracks: "Man's Complete Idiot" and "Wumpsex."

"Born Again" is a bit more melodic than prior releases, being as they are remixes, and are somewhat less chaotic than the usual :W: work. It seems a little bit easier to follow, more mellow, however still in the industrial vein of things. A complimentary addition to any :W: fans collection. Highly recommended.

:wumpscut:'s remix album Born Again is much more interesting to discover than his predecesor. Half of is modified by Rudy Ratzinger. Bands like Aghast View, Brain Leisure, B-TON-K and Haujobb brought to the other half, reaching new ideas.

What I prefer with this album is that the basic elements found on Embryodead are more exploited. Each band have their way of working, so the sound, the effects and the mixing are done differently. Wich gives to each song more originality and diversified ambiences.

The masterpiece of the is the Haujobb edit 2 mix of Die in Winter (originally on the US version of Bunker Gate Seven).

If you like Embryodead, you will love Born Again.

Egad!!! Has the techno virus infected even Rudy Ratzinger and his electro engine :Wumpscut:??? Indeed it has! Purists: not to fear, this remix album doesn't stray as far down the techno-trail as Haujobb's Matrix, for example. On Born Again, Rudy uses his ol' "change the beat and add a few new sounds" remix technique on six tracks from his latest, Embryodead only this time it's tecnho beats and techno sounds. Along with Rudy, Aghast View, Brain Leisure, Noisex, B-Ton-K, and Haujobb participate on this album.

Besides the six aforementioned Rudy R. mixes, both DJ Dead remixes appear here; which is extremely good, considering DJ Dead was produced in only 600 copies. While the Brain Leisure remix of "Angel" takes the song and melds it into a moving techno track, Aghast View completely re-construct the track "Embryodead", leaving the German samples and chorus strings as the only recognizable elements of the original.

Songs from Bunker Tor 7 (or Bunker Gate 7 depending on when and where you got your copy) also make a suprise appearance. The first is the (excellent) Haujobb remix of "Die in Winter", previously released on Bunker Gate 7, most likely included on the album for the Europeans who did not get that track on the import release. Also present is the previously unreleased "Vocal Version" of "Thorns", in which a female vocalist and Rudy sing (gasp! without distortion!) to the previously instrumental song. In my opinion, "Thorns" makes a better instrumental.

Other points of interest include the :Wumpscut: remix of the Aghast View track (!?!?) "Vaporize" and two new tracks written either in collaboration with or using samples by Noisex (the liner notes aren't clear).

Born Again serves for an interesting listen, with highlights including the Aghast View and "Cockroach Modified" remixes of "Embryodead", and the new :Wumpscut:/Noisex tracks. Although Rudy's mixes sometimes border on the verge of monotony, the occasional glimmers of creativity and the masterworks by the contributing artists overshadow the general lack of creativity in Rudy's mixes. And hey! - nearly anything is better than Embryodead!

I'm usually not big on remix albums, however I thought this was incredible.....14 tracks of remixes ranging from material off of several albums. Each song is a skillfully crafted EBM track, however not all are club friendly. There are two previously unreleased tracks on this album including "Wumpsex", an extremely abrasive piece of distorted percussion oriented material, and "Man's Complete Idiot", which is a more melodic/ambient piece. There is a great remix of the title track from "embryodead", which blends a breakbeat with a slower, more melodic version of the harsh song. There is also a version of the song "Thorns", which throws female vocals into the mix. Unfortunately, this doesn't do much to help the song, due to the fact that the melody of the vocals goes along exactly to the melody of the string structures. However, this was my only complaint. Another great release from the "Apocalyptic EBM" genius Rudy Ratzinger.

Following hot on the heels of Embryodead, Born Again is the latest in a seemingly never-ending flood of :wumpscut: releases from Metropolis. This one's a compilation, doing for Rudy's output from Bunkertor 7 onwards what The Mesner Tracks did for his earlier stuff by collecting together most of the rarities and obscure tracks. The material here is a mixture of unreleased material and alternate versions from limited edition releases with, more than a little bizarrely, a remix Rudy did for Aghast View thrown in for no particular reason.

The material is heavily skewed towards Embryodead-era tracks, simply because there are more remixes of material from that era. For the most part this isn't a problem, although two versions of "Womb" try the patience a little. The first track, a remix of "Is It You", takes one of the lighter (OK, perhaps "less dark" would be more appropriate) tracks from Embryodead and gives it a quick polish. As remixes go it's fairly subtle, with some nice elaborations on the rhythm track, and rather more in the way of glassy lead synth (presumably the reason this is the "Scintillating" mix). Next, the first of the two remixes of "Womb" is rather more dramatically different from the original, but still easily recognizable. There's extra synth work here, and the rhythm track has been given what I can only describe as a more urgent feel. Both this and the first track were remixed by Rudy himself.

The next two tracks were taken from the promo-only Deejaydead remix collection. "Angel" is given a rather basic "add a big thumpy bass" once-over by Brain Leisure, while Aghast View perform a rather more thorough remodelling of "Embryodead". The bulk of the changes are, rather predictably, in the rhythm track, but they do give an already chunky track some extra impact. "Golgotha (Roughly Distorted Version)" is, well, it's roughly distorted. It's a pleasant change to find a remix whose name is this descriptive. However, when you consider that the vocals in the original were pretty roughly distorted to start with, it's questionable whether distorting them still further was really necessary and, believe me, the vocals here are seriously distorted. They make the standard industrial "cookie monster" distorted vocals (which appear later in the track) sound like Rudy has been to finishing school and taken elocution lessons. There are other changes here, of course, including stretching out the track substantially.

Next, the first new track on the album, "Wumpsex". This is great stuff, a clangorous instrumental that pounds and crashes along at high speed. It's fairly repetitive and straightforward, but gradual changes in the rhythm track provide some variety. The mix that follows is the second of the "Womb" mixes here, and it's head-and-shoulders above the first. The reworked rhythm track gives the track a nice solid backbone, and while Rudy's still a little too fond of the "Chip'n'Dale Go To Hell" distorted and pitch-shifted voice which ruined the original version, he at least mixes it with his own voice in places. In fact, one of the transitions between the chipmunk and regular vocals is remarkably effective, as the voice ages over the "for the rest of your miserable days" line. It's really quite sinister.

The changes to "War" are a little less noticeable, and don't alter the track's character much. It's really more of an extended version than a remix, although there have been some changes to the rhythm track. The second unreleased track is the oddly titled "Man's Complete Idiot". Slow and dark, it revolves around a sample taken from The Elephant Man. Why is it oddly titled? Well, the sample says "Man's a complete idiot", and somewhere along the line Rudy's lost a couple of words, changing the meaning somewhat. Still, it's a good track, and shouldn't disappoint.

"Thorns" was one of my favourite tracks on Bunkertor 7, largely because it was so different from everything else on the album. Where the rest of the disc was typical :wumpscut: hard-EBM/dance industrial, "Thorns" was a remarkably light and up-beat (except for song's "thorn") instrumental. If anything, this alternate version is even better, adding vocals. It's a duet between a non-distorted Rudy and a female vocalist called Fabienne. It adds a lot to the track, and is very nice indeed. The next track goes in the opposite direction, stripping the vocals from "Down Where We Belong". Well, perhaps not - the title and the presence of a click track suggest this might be the original take on the track, and that the vocals came later.

The second remix of "Embryodead" is by Rudy himself, and takes the track in yet another new direction. In fact, in some ways it seems to be closer to a complete re-recording than a remix. It adds a slow groove to the track that wasn't there before, some new synth layers, and drum'n'bass embellishments. Oh, and it throws away the vocals too. Like I said, very different. The next track, "Vaporize", isn't even a :wumpscut: track, and I have to say that I find this a little bizarre. Yes, it's remixed by Rudy and, yes, it's a good remix, but the fact remains that it's an Aghast View track and thus a somewhat strange inclusion on a compilation of :wumpscut: material.

The album's final track is a Haujobb remix of "Die In Winter" that originally appeared on the US release of Bunkertor 7. Note that this is not the Haujobb remix of "Die In Winter" that appeared on the Remix Wars Strike 1 disc. While Haujobb have twisted the track in a highly original way, adding samples of themselves and sax (!) they've retained the original's slightly bizarre waltz-y tempo. The mix on Remix Wars managed the considerable feat of shoe-horning the track into a framework that used an entirely different time signature without the end result sounding like a complete mess.

All in all, Born Again is a disc that :wumpscut: fans won't want to be without. It's got a bunch of decent remixes and it's got a couple of unreleased tracks. Hell, it even includes a track by somebody else entirely, how many discs can you say that about? It's not without its faults - two mixes of "Womb" is at least one too many - but it's a good way of staving off :wumpscut: starvation until Rudy's next one is released.

Wumpscut’s latest release, Born Again, comes less than ½ year after his last album, Embryodead. Born Again consists of 14 tracks of remixes and unreleased tracks, most of which were spawned from Embryodead. There are quite a few unique things about this CD.

1) a version of Thorns with female vocals,
2) a collaboration with Raoul (Noisex) in the form of Wumpsex, and
3) a remix of an Aghast View track (Vaporize.)

The Aghast View piece actually appeared on AV's last release, entitled Vapor Eyes, but Rudy felt that his mix was done so well that he decided to include it in the collection. Wumpsex is just what you’d expect, an equally developed piece that takes the angry noise of Noisex and mixes it together with the dark electronics of Wumpscut. Although it is a bit repetitive, this piece does showcase both individuals talents. Thorns (Distant Vocals Version) was the biggest surprise. Considering that this was one of my favorite W pieces to begin with, it was only improved with the addition of the soft female vocals. The instrumental, Man’s Complete Idiot, is a previously unreleased piece with quivering and ominous, dark electronics, minimal samples, and beats that sound as if they were fashioned after drum and bass. Off of the hard to come by Deejaydead CD comes the Brain Leisure mix of Angel and the Aghast View mix of Embryodead, so now all of you collectors can finally have those missing tracks. Brain Leisure take Angel and add a more upbeat flavor to it by softening up some of the electronics and adding a strict, looped dance beat in the background. The Aghast View mix sounds more like a Biopsy mix in that they utilize a Swamp Terrorist styled tech beat amongst the divergent rhythm. Except for a couple of samples, this version is a complete instrumental. Lastly, the CD finishes off with the Haujobb mix of Die in Winter, which was previously only available on the US version of Bunker Gate 7. Rudy has made quite a name for himself is a short period of time and after listening to Born Again it’s easy to hear why his music stands above the rest.

I must confess, before even this (wumpscut’s latest album) I was a fan of Ruby Ratzinger’s work. Now, its almost as though there is no one else (not exactly true but i’m sure you get the idea). You get introduced with a lovely mellow yet on edge remix of ‘Is It You’ with Ruby’s raw yet calming vocals coming over the almost ‘chimeing’ sound of the track. This first track extends out to the album incredibly well.

Then the first remix of ‘womb’ cries out "In your womb" and my pulse just froze within the second, the distorted electronic ‘bleeps’ that come into the track are amazing, and never to fast. When the baby like vocals are introduced a quick series of dense beats enter the well combinedmaelstrom of sounds to give it that danceable edge (and hell, I’d like to see someone try to stop me dancing to this track).

The remix of Embryodead by Aghast View has a long introduction of German sampling, slowly rolling in new music in the background, which accentuates the sampling. Then the words "God is dead, Hail Satan" comes out bringing the new music a bit more up beat. Eventually after a minute and a half some of the original familiar tunes are bought in and giving it that live raw edge of Embryodead a bit after 2 minutes. Brilliantly done.

The other memorable track was a redone version of ‘Thorns’ from Bunkertor 7 only with male and female vocals, making it an even better track than before. The rest of the album just flows and flows and is all great, but ‘Womb’, ‘Embryodead,’ and ‘Thorns’ just shine above the rest. If you like previous Wumpscut (especially the album Embryodead) then I highly recommend you put this on your must buy list.

Hmm. It wasn't so long ago when I was gasping in anticipation of the last Wumpscut album Embryodead. Then I got it finally, put it in the CD player and I liked it. Then after a while I loved it. Now soon after Mr Rudy Ratzinger has released this remix album with some other bits and bobs chucked in. I am always a bit sceptical about remix albums. It seems a bit of a rip off paying for the same album twice, especially when all the remixes sound the same as the originals. That is not always the case though - but it is here! Lets see, nine remixes from Embryodead. Six by Rudy himself, and to be honest they are not that much different; a distorted snare here, a few seconds on the intro there! Who cares? The track I have to take issue with is the instrumental version of Down where we belong. I loved the original but its now worse, what's the point? The last 10 seconds are nice though! Okay, I got that off my chest, what else do we have? Brain Leisure turn in a very good mix of Angel, aimed straight at the dancefloor and certain to be a hit, it starts off pretty low key then BLAM! hands in the air! There is a quite nice remix of Emryodead by Aghast View, although some points knocked off for the Haujobb samples. There is also an Aghast View song remixed by Wumpscut which is very smart and a lot better than the rest of the stuff I have heard by them. But then again it just sounds like Wumpscut with a different vocalist! Right what's left. Okay, a new version of Thorns which originally appeared on Bunkertor 7 (Or Bunker Gate 7 for all you American people!). Seems like Wumpscuts go at a goth anthem to rival Project Pitchforks Souls! Musically the same as the original but now a twin male/female vocal assault. Crimpers out everyone! Finally we have two new songs. Firstly Wumpsex, which claims to feature Noisex `bits'. Good and rather noisy but it does go on a bit. Secondly we have Mans complete idiot which trudges on for 3 minutes but I like it anyway because it has a lovely chord sequence through it which is implanted in my brain already! Well how do I sum that up. None of the remixes are better than, or even as good as the versions on Embryodead (apart from Angel). Some of the other bits and pieces are quite nice but not really essential. If you havnt got Embryodead buy that instead.

This isn't a new Wumpscut album, the new one will be out on the autumn of 1998 as Rudy has just started to record it. This is a remix compilation of :Wumpscut: tracks (plus one Aghast View track called Vaporize remixed by :Wumpscut: himself), 12 remixed (7 remixed directly by Rudy and others by people like Aghast View, Haujobb and Brain Leisure) and two new ones (but I think that they're a little too simple to be considered new :Wumpscut: tracks, as they are distorted synth loop done with the help of Noisex). Nine tracks out of fourteen are from the last album "Embryodead" (Embryodead and Womb are present twice) and the others two, without counting the new ones and the Aghast View one, are coming from "Bunkertor 7". It is difficult to give a judgment to this CD, because sometimes the tracks are similar to the original ones and as told on the titles sometimes the new version are "roughly distorted" (Golgotha), "miserable days mixx" (Womb) or "distant vocal version" (Thorns) and sometimes tracks could change their sound, like in the case of the instrumental Embryodead (Deejaydead remixx) where the original sound turns into something more techno oriented with some stop and go. At this point you could ask me if I recommend this CD to you... Well, the answer is yes if you are really into :Wumpscut: and you consider yourself a great fan, if not first purchase a copy of "Embryodead" and listen to it over and over.

Anspieltips: "Is It You" (Scintillating Mix), "Golgotha" (Roughly Distorted Version) und "Vaporize" (:Wumpscut: Remix).

Rudy ratzinger is the sole manipulator behind the terror-tech german electro act known as :wumpscut: for those who do not know, this project has sliced it's way into the electro scene in recent years with awesome power. "born again" is the follow-up to the incredible :wumpscut: release "embryodead" offering mostly previously unreleased remixes of cuts from that album. I myself was impressed with many of the remixes on this disk for most give a complete re-working of the original tracks... Some of the highlights of this release include the first cut, "is it you (scintillating mix)" which opens this disk nicely. Two versions of "womb" grace this cd, one entitled the "born again" remix done by none other than rudy himself and the other called "miserable days mixx" modified by the up-and-coming b-ton-k. The latter is a chilling mix incorporating 909-gabber-style kicks and manages to develop into an even more haunting version than the original. "angel (deejaydead remixx)" is beefed up with a pumping techno bassline and moves along nicely unlike the slower original. This track and a "deejaydead remixx" of "embryodead" were gracious added to this release for all of us who didn't get our hands on the extremely rare "deejaydead" promo. There are two unreleased cuts on here as well entitled "man's complete idiot" and "wumpsex", a noisy, repetitive piece that you may wind up skipping after a few listens. The "revenge and nemisis version" of "war" is more like a dub but still mantains the delicious chaos of the original. Rudy included a "distant vocals version" of "thorns" that adds female vocals over the original - kind of nice! There's a track on here by Aghast View titled "vaporize" and remixed by Rudy - the sound is very old school. Last but not least is "die in winter" brilliantly molested by non other than haujobb who offer a slower, worked-over version. This disk is perfect for the hardcore :W: fan as well as a new-comer. New album to come in 1999! Stay tuned! > synctank <

This is in many respects a remix collection for ‘Embryodead’, collecting a number of alternate versions of the albums tracks from various sources, adding a couple of previously unreleased tracks and a few other oddities for good measure. It’s worth noting that most of the mixes present are done in-house by Rudy, with usual suspects like B-Ton-K and Haujobb proving the rest. Despite the relatively strong source material, the results are somewhat disappointing - ‘Embryodead’ was a relatively cohesive album by :W: standards and it loses much of this power when shuffled around like this. The bulk of the remixes seem to sit in the ‘OK but not as good as the original’ camp, many of them sounding rather ‘forced’.

Some mixes are interesting, such as the attempts to add dance beats to ‘Womb’ and ‘Angel’, although these songs lose some of their ’spirit’ in the process, whilst some mixes (such as the ‘Embryodead’ reworks) seems intent on removing everything that was good about the original. The two new tracks are good enough, ‘Wumpsex’ a straightforward noisebeat romp, whilst ‘Man’s Complete Idiot’ does the ’slow and omnious’ thing Rudy’s done umpteen times before. All considered, the album’s only real selling point is the ‘distant’ vocals version of ‘Thorns’ (not an ‘Embryodead’ track, but never mind that now), Rudy’s duet with Fabienne D. meshing perfectly with the orignal tune, a rare opportunity to hear the voice of :Wumpscut: undistorted. It’s just a pity it couldn’t be accompanied by some stronger tracks than what’s on offer here.
